'Arizona', reproduced from a painting by Samuel Walters. image size: 36x54cm. overall size: 59x75cm. mounted on card, with printed detailsl of the ship, and framed and glazed. the card mount is a bit dust-soiled and the lacquered frame is a bit worn and damaged, but the print itself is in good, fresh condition.
the 'Arizona' was built by John Elder & Co., Govan in 1879 for the American Guion Line, and quickly became the fastest liner of her day, holding the Blue Riband for the eastward crossing from 1879 to 1882. Samuel Walters, the renowned Merseyside marine artist, would no doubt have been commissioned to paint the ship portrait by the Guion Line, and this print would have been issued by the company 006 011 802 *
